Large Blacks
Our
Large Blacks are easy to handle and excellent mothers who
watch over their piglets like a trooper.
They will let you know when you are trespassing too close and will gather up the babies and put herself between you and the babies.
Our Large Black Hogs are easy to work with, if you take your time, as the floppy ears get in the way. The lop ears fall forward over the face and protect the eyes from damage while rooting and foraging.
The Large Black became almost extinct during the 1960's and remains one of the rarest British pig breeds. The breed was placed on the Rare Breed Survival Trust Critical Endangered list in 1973.
A mature boar may weigh 700 to 800 pounds and sows reach 600 to 700 pounds. In the U.S., there are approximately 300 breeding Large Black Hogs as of 2008.
